STD Testing

When should I get tested for STDs?

You should get STD testing prior to engaging in any sexual activity with a new partner. Many STD’s don’t cause symptoms, so it can be difficult to know when you’re putting your new partner at risk until you’ve had your STD testing.

It’s also recommended to undergo STD testing if you haven’t had a test in a while to assess  your reproductive health.

Dr. Yung provides quick and confidential STD testing to give you a peace of mind or appropriate treatment when you need it.

What are the symptoms of STDs?

Not all STDs cause symptoms. The following are just some of the STDs that can cause symptoms.

Chlamydia can affect men and women and can lead to infertility if it isn’t properly treated.

Women who have chlamydia might notice abnormal vaginal discharge or a burning sensation during urination.

Men with chlamydia might have a discharge from the penis, a burning sensation when urinating, and swelling and pain in one or both testicles.

Genital herpes

Genital herpes causes raised, red bumps or sores around the genitals. These sores can be mistaken for a pimple or an ingrown hair.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV)

BV is the most common infection in women between the ages of 15-44. Bacterial vaginosis causes gray or white vaginal discharge, itching, pain, and burning in the vagina, a strong fishy odor, and burning during urination.

HIV doesn’t cause symptoms, but it can compromise your immune system and lead to the development of AIDS over time.

Human papillomavirus (HPV)

High-risk HPV is a leading cause of cervical cancer. Both women and men can be carriers of HPV. High-risk HPV doesn't present symptoms, but it can be tested for or it can show up as an abnormal PAP smear test result in women.

If you have concerns about your risk for STDs, you can discuss this with Dr. Yung. Dr. Yung gives you helpful information on how to reduce your risk of STDs.

What does an STD test involve?

Dr. Yung offers different types of STD testing. With some tests, Dr. Yung takes a sample of blood from your arm. Other testing methods involve taking a sample from your cervix, vagina, vulva, or rectum for testing.

Testing is confidential and quick and if you do find out you have an STD, Dr. Yung provides appropriate treatment, such as lifestyle recommendations and prescription medications to relieve your symptoms and resolve your infection.
