When should I visit an obstetrican?

The first step in obstetrics care is preconception planning.  A preconception evaluation with Dr. Yung provides the opportunity to optimize the patient’s health before a pregnancy. Preconception care also helps reduce the risk of adverse health effects for both the woman and the fetus during pregnancy. Together, we will optimize your health and discuss the timing to best allow a successful pregnancy.

When should I visit an obstetrician during my pregnancy?

As soon as you think you might be pregnant, you should arrange a visit with Dr. Yung. Dr. Yung will perform a pregnancy test to officially confirm the pregnancy and begin your prenatal care immediately.

During weeks 4-28, visits are usually once every month and from weeks 28-36, prenatal visits are scheduled every two weeks.

Once you reach the 37th week of your pregnancy, you should visit Dr. Yung once a week until the delivery. Special-needs pregnancies and high-risk pregnancies might require more frequent visits.

What is prenatal care?

Prenatal care is an especially important part of motherhood for both mother and baby. Prenatal care involves:

  • Checkups
  • Ultrasounds
  • Physical exams
  • Routine screening and diagnostic testing
  • Medical history evaluations
  • Prenatal genetic testing

During your prenatal care visits, you also have plenty of time to discuss your pregnancy questions or concerns as well as an in-depth medical history evaluation.

What changes are normal during pregnancy?

During the early and middle stages of pregnancy, you might experience various changes, such as:

  • Weight gain
  • Back pain
  • Sleeplessness
  • Mood swings
  • Increased urination
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Sore breasts

In the final stages of your pregnancy, you might experience:

  • Breast growth
  • Stretch marks
  • Shortness of breath

Some women also have hemorrhoids during pregnancy.

How much weight should I gain while pregnant?

The amount of weight gain varies depending on the individual. Women of average height and weight should gain about 25-35 pounds during pregnancy. It’s important to gain weight by consuming healthy foods that nourish you and your baby.

Dr. Yung will discuss nutrition and give you guidance on how to live a healthier lifestyle throughout your pregnancy.

What type of medicine is allowed during pregnancy?

Medicine during pregnancy is assessed on a case by case basis. Dr. Yung might prescribe medications to help you with specific issues like vomiting and nausea.

She might suggest supplements to ensure you and your baby get the essential nutrients you need to boost your health and wellness.

Tylenol is generally permitted for pain relief. If there’s any question about whether a medication is safe during pregnancy, you can discuss it with Dr. Yung during your visit.
