Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding

What is abnormal vaginal bleeding?

Abnormal vaginal bleeding refers to any vaginal bleeding that isn’t related to your normal menstruation (such as spotting or bleeding between periods) or excessive bleeding or prolonged bleeding with your periods.

You might notice blood in the toilet when you wipe or have extremely heavy menstruation where you soak a tampon or pad every one to two hours for two hours or more.

Normal vaginal bleeding (menstruation) occurs every 21 to 35 days when the uterus sheds its lining. This marks the beginning of a new reproductive cycle. A menstrual period might only last for a few days or it can last up to a week.

What causes abnormal vaginal bleeding?

Abnormal vaginal bleeding might be associated with a number of issues with your reproductive system or with other medical problems or certain medications.

Some of the causes of abnormal vaginal bleeding include:

  • Reproductive organ cancer
  • Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • Changing birth control pills
  • Menopausal hormone therapy
  • Ectopic pregnancy

  • Endometritis

Sexual abuse and trauma to the vagina and cervix can also result in abnormal vaginal bleeding.
